Entering Week 9 there are four undefeated teams left in the FBS, and 18 more with just one loss so far this season. Those four undefeated teams, especially the three from power conferences (Mississippi State, Florida State and Ole Miss), have an obvious leg up on the rest of the country, but the crowd of one-loss teams has proven difficult to decipher.

The hosts of ESPN’s College GameDay discussed who they thought the best one-loss teams in America are, and two SEC West powers were mentioned in the discussion.

Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard claimed Alabama is the best one-loss team in America, while Lee Corse asserted defending SEC champion Auburn is the best among the one-loss programs. Alabama’s lone defeat of the season came against No. 3 Ole Miss on Oct. 4, and Auburn’s only loss came to No. 1 Mississippi State two weeks ago.

This week, both schools will face unranked SEC East foes. Alabama takes on Tennessee in Knoxville while Auburn will play host to South Carolina.
