Criticizing the broadcasters: Not every visor wearer is a Spurrier
By Nick Cole
Published:
As SEC fans are well aware, former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is known for his wearing his trademark visor on game days.
Much like his old boss, Gamecocks offensive coordinator G.A. Mangus also enjoys wearing a visor from time to time.
There’s no crime in that, but apparently it does make him a target for a mistaken identity.

Mangus, who is pictured above in said visor, was captured on the sidelines during the fourth quarter of the Gamecocks’ loss to the Gators.
The ESPN broadcast, captained by play-by-play man Mike Patrick with Ed Cunningham on the color commentary, was in the midst of talking about how the South Carolina coaching staff, which includes Spurrier’s son Steve Jr., is transitioning to working for interim coach Shawn Elliott.
In the process, Cunningham misidentified Mangus as Spurrier’s son, and went on to praise him for wearing a visor in honor of his dad. The video is below:
You’re not going to get that past SEC fans, guys. Twitter reacted immediately:
So when did GA Mangus become Steve Spurrier Jr.?
— Abbott Staggs (@Staggs45) November 14, 2015
That's GA Mangus you idiot
— RP (@BreakinDownFilm) November 14, 2015
Ed Cunningham just said "there's Steve Spurrier Jr." when it was clearly GA Mangus. Good try though.

Apparently GA Mangus is now Steve Spurrier Jr.

#UFvsSC broadcast is a joke. That's GA Mangus not Spurrier Jr. Hate watching a game with the 8th string broadcast team…#Gators #Gamecocks

Visor profiling is wrong, and SEC fans simply won’t stand for it.
We’re not done with you, Ed.
In the same Florida-South Carolina game, Cunningham was giving his list of potential replacements for Steve Spurrier at South Carolina.
The ESPN broadcast put up the following screenshot during the discussion:

While Tom Harmon, who was a former Heisman Trophy winner at Michigan and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, probably could’ve offered a great deal of football knowledge to South Carolina, he also passed away 25 years ago.
Houston’s head coach is Tom Herman, you guys. Herman.
Uncle Verne: Relief pitcher on the mind in Mississippi
We can’t have an installment of Criticizing the Broadcasters without giving some love to everyone’s favorite CBS announcer.
Verne Lundquist was on the call at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville for Alabama’s 31-6 win against Mississippi State.
But it seemed all Verne could think about was Wade Davis, who closed out the final game of the World Series for the Kansas City Royals a couple weeks ago.
Lundquist told folks he was bringing them action from “Wade Davis Field”, only to hilariously correct himself to say it was “Wade Davis Stadium.”
Twitter enjoyed this one:
Verne just said Wade Davis Field, then corrected himself to Wade Davis Stadium.

"Wade Davis Field, excuse me … Wade Davis Stadium. At Scott Field." Verne confused at Davis Wade Stadium. @awfulannouncing
— Brent Maze (@bmaze) November 14, 2015
And Verne mispronounces MSU's stadium in a typical Verne comment. "wade davis stadium"
— Matt Haines ?? (@haines_matt) November 14, 2015
Verne just said, "Wade-Davis Stadium." Is this a joke? @SEConCBS should consider a change. This happens way too often. #BAMAvsMSST
