Greg Sankey says he’s ‘not tolerable’ with unranked teams in the Playoff
Greg Sankey spoke with SEC Nation with Week 1 starting to kick off around the country. Sankey’s thoughts on College Football Playoff expansion can be heard at secsports.com.
The CFP will be expanding to 12 teams in 2024. Sankey wanted to clarify that there will be no automatic qualifiers, but conference champions with access.
“I’m just gonna make one really important correction. There are no automatic qualifiers, there are conference champions with access. That’s based right now on quality. The original format is the six most highly rated conference champions and then the six remaining best or highly rated at-large teams who are not conference champions.”
Sankey also stated that the committee will have to wait and see what happens now that Cal, Stanford, and SMU are joining the ACC in 2024. Sankey explained his stance on having unranked teams in the playoff.
“We just spent a day in Dallas. We have to see now what happens with Cal and Stanford, and then what happens with the Pac-12. What’s not tolerable is to have unranked teams in the 12-team playoff. That has now been introduced with some of these conference changes. We just have to see how things play out.”
There are a lot of changes happening in college football next season to say the least.
