Get to know this name, SEC fans, as you’ll have someone new to tag next season in your angry officiating tweets.

The SEC just named John McDaid the league’s new Coordinator of Football Officials following Steve Shaw’s departure this offseason — Shaw left his post with the SEC to assume the role of national coordinator of college football officiating.

McDaid takes over as the SEC head of officiating following 24 years of officiating experience at the collegiate level. McDaid’s resume includes four College Football Playoff games and the 2017 SEC Championship Game.

Following the hire, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey issued the following statement:

“John is widely recognized as one of the finest football officials in the nation and we are fortunate to have someone with his knowledge and ability serving in this important leadership position for our conference. His educational background, successful officiating career and extensive management experience with Microsoft have prepared him to successfully guide the SEC’s football officiating program into the future.” McDaid has served as a referee in the Southeastern Conference since 2015, joining the SEC after two years in the same position with the American Athletic Conference. He was a referee in the Big East Conference from 2006-2012 and a back judge in the Big East from 2001-2005.”

If you were unaware, the SEC and the Sun Belt have a cooperative agreement placing McDaid in charge of both league’s officiating. So McDaid will also be the new Sun Belt Coordinator of Football Officials with this news.
