At least one referee is off to a rough start in 2023.
On Saturday, an official was hit in the face by a pass from point-blank range in the Ohio-San Diego State game.
It happened as SDSU quarterback Jalen Mayden was moving to his left and trying to escape pressure.
Here’s a replay of the unfortunate event:

Ouch.
This is the season-opener for both San Diego State and Ohio.
The Aztecs, led by former Michigan coach Brady Hoke, are coming off of back-to-back season of reaching bowl eligibility. SDSU will be trying to get back to the postseason for a 3rd straight year in 2023.
Ohio is also coming off of a successful 2022 campaign. The Bobcats won 10 games a year ago and posted a 7-1 record in MAC play.
These 2 programs have met once previously — back in 2018 in the Frisco Bowl. . Ohio won that contest 27-0.
