Uniform update: Special threads backfire for Oregon, Texas A&M

Oregon’s ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ uniforms along with Texas A&M’s special ‘Ice White’ combination were appealing to the eyes, but two of college football’s elite didn’t fare too well this weekend in updated threads.

Nike’s provided the Ducks with several pink-inspired looks over the last few years, but Thursday’s matte black helmets with a pink primary logo on the back of the shell along with matching mach speed uniforms was one of the best. Oregon’s ensuing loss to Arizona was just the start of a record-setting Week 6 filled with upsets in the Top 10.

Texas A&M debuted an all-black with maroon accents uniform at Mississippi State two years ago and unveiled its inverse Saturday, an all-white Adidas set. The Aggies’ chrome to white gradient helmets were fantastic, but silver numerals on white jerseys were lost in the sun — as were the wide receivers’ ability to catch passes from Kenny Hill.

It’s not likely we ever see either of these two combinations again.

Kentucky’s chrome helmets with a chrome primary logo against South Carolina were the perfect touch with all black threads during the Wildcats’ come-from-behind victory. We’ll see these again.

During a victory over Pitt, Virginia donned carbon fiber helmets for the first time under Mike London. They looked sharp with the Cavaliers’ all-white jersey-pants set.
