WATCH: Virginia QB throws one of the worst interceptions of 2017

When a quarterback gets outside the pocket and has no open receivers, he’s taught to throw the ball out of bounds to avoid taking a big loss.

However, when you throw the ball away, you have to make sure it actually goes out of bounds, as Virginia QB Kurt Benkert learned the hard way on Saturday.

As you can see in the video below, Benkert tries to flick the ball out of bounds backhanded, but instead tosses it right into the arms of a Boston College defender:

What makes Benkert’s decision so baffling is that he could have chucked it out of bounds and there would have been no penalty.

Why he decided to casually flick the ball toward the sideline is something that he’ll have to answer during film review next week.

Next time, he’ll be sure to fire the ball into the stands if he has to in order to avoid an interception.
