South Carolina suffered a major injury within its ranks during a Friday practice as starting quarterback Luke Doty sustained an apparent fracture in his foot along with minor damage to one of his ligaments. The news was first reported by journalist Mike Gillespie from WOLO-TV in Columbia.

It is not known at this time what a potential timetable for the return of Doty would be, with that pending further evaluation of the injury by doctors and specialists. Head coach Shane Beamer was to update the media on the status of Doty on Saturday afternoon. However, Gillespie notes that it’s possible that the starting role would belong to St. Francis transfer Jason Brown.

On Saturday, a former Gamecocks quarterback sent out well wishes to his former teammate via Twitter: Ryan Hilinski, now at Northwestern.

Last year, as a true freshman, Doty played in 8 games while starting twice, going 43-of-71 for 405 yards while throwing 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. In his first career start, he went 18-for-22 for 190 yards.

The Gamecocks open against Eastern Illinois on Sept. 4.
