Shane Beamer and South Carolina finally had some resemblance of a running game in Week 4.

Beamer talked about the contributions from running back Mario Anderson in particular at Tuesday’s presser. The South Carolina head coach was asked why Anderson didn’t move into the backfield rotation earlier this season.

Anderson finished Saturday’s game with 88 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. One of the reasons for not using Anderson as much had to do with the progression of the young Gamecock RB.

“I think he continues to get better and progress. There’s no question about it. He did a really nice job in blitz pick up the other night,” said Beamer. “That first touchdown to Xavier Legette, he firmed up the pocket. Learning that, and then the pass catching out of the backfield. He’s just continued to work.

Another reason that Beamer gave had to do with how Dakereon Joyner has done in the backfield.

“The other thing is that let’s realize Dakereon Joyner has done some really nice things as well,” said Beamer. “Joyner had a touchdown run the other night where we completely whiffed and didn’t even block the linebacker. He lowered his shoulder and ran through one of the better linebackers in the SEC.”

Perhaps Anderson will see his touches continue to go up as the season goes on.
