South Carolina announces $1 billion project to transform area around Williams-Brice Stadium

South Carolina’s athletics department on Tuesday announced a $1 billion modernization project at and around Williams-Brice Stadium, which has drawn comparisons to the sprawling area around Truist Park in Atlanta, home of the Braves.

There are no formal plans, timelines or budgets set for the project, but the Request for Information allows the university to hear ideas from developers for more than 800 acres of undeveloped property already owned by the university. Senior university officials expect the vast majority of funding for the project to come from private contributions, the Greenville News reported.

Athletics Director Ray Tanner said: “We believe this could be a game changer for our university. These projects are envisioned to create a fan experience second-to-none in college athletics. We are also looking at expanding the variety of events and opportunities these enhancements can bring, which will positively impact the local community.”

Tanner added that one of the primary goals of the project is to expand premium offerings inside of Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks have the second-fewest number of luxury suites among SEC stadiums, and the suites currently have more than 100 fans on the waiting list.

Other upgrades include improvements to concessions, bathrooms and the concourses.
