South Carolina had an impressive 2024, finishing the regular season with a 9-3 record. As a result, the team’s offensive coordinator, Dowell Loggains, earned the head coaching job at Appalachian State.

Luckily for the Gamecocks, the team didn’t have to go far to find its new OC. According to a report from Chris Clark of On3, the team will promote Mike Shula to the position. Shula spent the 2024 season on Shane Beamer’s staff as an offensive analyst but will presumably now call plays for South Carolina.

In 2024, the Gamecocks finished the regular season at No. 74 in passing offense, No. 34 in rushing offense, and No. 48 in total offense. One of the bright spots was quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who showed significant improvement as the season went along. The former top prospect threw for 2,274 yards with 17 TDs and 7 INTs while rushing for 655 yards and 7 more TDs.

Shula is the son of Don Shula, who is the NFL’s all-time winningest head coach. The younger Shula is best known for being the head coach of Alabama from 2003-06. From 2007-23, Shula worked in the NFL for several teams as an assistant. The coach joined Beamer at South Carolina in 2023 and clearly made an impact on the head coach.

This will be the 1st new OC hire for Beamer since 2022. Maximizing Sellers’ potential will likely be the focus for Beamer and Shula in 2025. Shula will get his first experience as the OC when the Gamecocks take on Illinois in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
