After it was announced that Conner Weigman would miss the remainder of the season, Max Johnson is now Texas A&M’s starter.

Johnson, an LSU transfer, has experience as a starter and Aggies’ head coach Jimbo Fisher is nothing short of confident in his abilities moving forward.

“He’s been a starter in this league, played a lot of football, was 2-0 for us a year ago as the starter and then unfortunately got hurt,” Fisher said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “So feel very comfortable.”

In Saturday’s game after Weigman went down, Johnson had a solid outing with 123 yards and 2 touchdowns. Coming into the season, it was not clear whether Weigman or Johnson would start, which Fisher saw as a good problem to have. Weigman ultimately was named QB1, but Fisher has full confidence that Johnson will be fine as the starter. He is also getting his backups some reps in case they need to go in.

“We’re blessed to have (Johnson) and feel very confident and we’re going to keep right on pace,” Fisher said. “They’ve been taking reps and do a great job in practice, understand the offense. Doing a great job, they comprehend it. Jaylen’s a little older, more mature in terms of being in games and around the game and thought he had a great spring and fall camp himself.”

Texas A&M has a tough game against Arkansas this weekend that will be a good first test for Johnson at quarterback.
