With Nick Starkel healthy, Kevin Sumlin comments on Texas A&M’s QB situation

During Saturday’s 35-14 loss to Mississippi State, Texas A&M redshirt freshman QB Nick Starkel saw his first action since breaking his ankle in Week 1 against UCLA.
Since then, true freshman Kellen Mond has taken over the quarterback position and has played well, but now that Starkel’s healthy, it’s fair to wonder if he’ll see more action.
During Tuesday’s press conference, though, coach Kevin Sumlin said he is not currently considering a change from Mond to Starkel (via TexAgs.com):
“We’re not opening up the quarterback competition right now,” Sumlin said at his weekly press conference. “(Backup) Nick Starkel made some plays, but there were some issues as well. He made a couple of mistakes and a couple really nice throws. There’s some rust on him right now. The situation will remain the same.”
Mond has led the Aggies to narrow wins over Florida, South Carolina and Arkansas, as well as an eight-point loss to Alabama.
Therefore, it makes sense to stick with the freshman, who has made the most of his opportunity to start and can use the rest of the season to develop.
The Aggies host Auburn this weekend in an important game for both schools. If Mond struggles early, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Starkel get some more action.
