Bru McCoy insists he sets Juggs machine ‘below breaking fingers’ to simulate Joe Milton’s throws

Bru McCoy joined On3Sports’ Andy Staples Tuesday to discuss his role in the Vols’ 2023 campaign.

McCoy, who transferred from USC ahead of last season, has become a reliable target for the Vols across the past year. His YAC ability makes him a strong asset in the swing game and his hands make him dependable when you need 10 or so yards in a pinch.

Like the rest of Tennessee’s WRs, McCoy has been out to a bit of a slow start so far this season. Perhaps that’s just life adjusting to Joe Milton III instead of Hendon Hooker under center.

Milton is a unique quarterback in that he throws hard. Very hard. We’re talking about the same guy that can throw an orange the length of a football field here. As for whether that adds to his accuracy issues, that’s a question for another article.

Tennessee seems to be using Milton’s arm strength as a weapon in the short passing game, not an excuse. McCoy explained to Staples that Tennessee has placed an emphasis on the speed of the ball this year. With Tennessee, it’s all about speed.

To practice for Milton on gamedays McCoy has been turning the Juggs machine up to a 5 or 6, which is just below “breaking fingers” according to McCoy.

“I think we’ve got it turned up about like just a threshold below breaking your fingers,” McCoy told Staples on Tuesday. “It’s probably five or six on the Juggs. We always keep it high just to challenge ourselves, but definitely an emphasis on speed of the ball this year.”

McCoy and the rest of Tennessee’s wide receivers need a big game Saturday when the Vols travel to the Swamp to take on Florida, looking to exorcise a demon that’s been plaguing Tennessee since 2003.

Kick is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
