Butch Jones discusses potential changes to Tennessee’s offense during bye week

No coach in the SEC may be facing as much heat as Butch Jones is currently facing at Tennessee. The 41-0 loss to Georgia may prove to be the beginning of the end for the Volunteer coach, however, a favorable second-half schedule could be enough to earn the Tennessee coach another year on the job.
It that has any chance of happening, the current off week will be paramount to solving the team’s issues, especially on the defensive side of the ball. During Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference, Jones discussed the work being done to solve the team’s issues.
Here’s a summary of what the Tennessee coach had to say:
- On Nigel Warrior’s improvement? “He continues to progress, He’s come to work every day, we are very pleased with him. He likes to joke around and have fun, his teammates respect him. When he gets on the field, he’s done a good job of focusing, his eye discipline is much improved.”
- Thoughts on Alabama killing SEC teams? “Well, we have been focused on ourselves. Haven’t had time to look at Alabama but we have tremendous respect for them.”
- Have you ever overhauled on offense during an open week? “No, I don’t think there’s time for that. There’s so much to work on during a bye week, repetition is the mother of all learning. We have to identify deficiencies and work on those.”
- Concerned about the confidence of your team? “No. We have had a great work of practice, we have competed out there. The last few weeks have been disappointing but I’ve liked our approach this week.”
- Short memory on the bye week? “You have to, although you have to go back and identify what went wrong. You want a short memory but you can’t forget. You have to avoid the same mistakes.”
- Any changes on the offensive side? “I think it goes back to winning details. Right now we are -4 in turnover margin and that’s something we typically pride ourselves on. Only three teams in the nation have a negative turnover margin and have a winning record and we are one of them.”
