Tennessee coach Butch Jones expects to have a new deal “very shortly.” The coach confirmed that he is close to agreeing to a proposed raise and extension with the Volunteers after the team’s first bowl practice Saturday afternoon.

“Our athletic administration and everyone here has been extremely supportive of everything in terms of resources and support,” he said. “I would anticipate something coming here very shortly.”

Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart told Volquest.com that the program is working on a contract extension and raise for Jones, footballscoop.com reported Tuesday. The second-year coach’s current deal is worth $2.95 million and has four years remaining.

The website also reported that Jones was contacted by Michigan about filling its coaching vacancy — but would not be a candidate — hours before the Wolverines parted ways with former coach Brady Hoke.
