Should Jalen Hurd sit out in Tennessee's game against Chattanooga?
Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd missed significant time during last Saturday’s 10-9 loss to Florida after suffering a shoulder injury midway through the contest. Hurd– who missed most of his senior season at Beech High School recovering from surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder– is expected to practice Monday and should be able to participate in Saturday’s game against Chattanooga, according to head coach Butch Jones.
“We anticipate him being at practice today,” Jones said. “He had a little bit of a shoulder ding in the game, but he went back in. He’s received treatments and we fully anticipate him being ready for Chattanooga. He’ll be participating in practice today. He’s cleared for practice, so he’ll be fine. It’s just the wear and tear that goes on with shoulders of a running back that plays physical. No more, no less.”
Jones did not specify which shoulder Hurd injured, but with a history of such injuries, Tennessee shouldn’t risk its freshman tailback’s health this weekend. Hurd leads the Vols with 367 yards and two touchdowns. Though his immediate success as the team’s feature back is important, the bigger picture must be taken into consideration.
Hurd was viewed by many as the crown jewel of Tennessee’s recruiting class. The five-star in-state prospect helped boost the Vols to a top-5 ranking and his early enrollment has made him one of the key contributors to the team’s early offensive success. But Saturday’s game presents a perfect opportunity for the freshman to recover, rather than risking further injury.
Chattanooga is a far inferior opponent and will not be able to match Tennessee’s depth chart. The FCS school does not bring in the level of talent as its “big brother” in the University of Tennessee system. Regardless of whether their best running back plays, the Vols should be able to handle the Mocs easily.
Hurd needs to take Week 7 off regardless of the severity of his injury. He should participate in practice and– at best– see limited carries to stay in a groove. However, it’s pointless to risk further injury with a young player that means so much for Tennessee’s rebuilding process against a far interior opponent.
