Tennessee has the tools to be a College Football Playoff contender in 2024.

Josh Heupel’s Vols have put together a strong offensive line to protect uber-talented starter Nico Iamaleava, who is also surrounded with weapons at wide receiver, tight end and running back. The defensive line stands out on the other side of the ball, led by junior edge rusher James Pearce and senior interior linemen Omari Thomas and Bryson Eason.

There’s one area that has some serious questions marks though: The secondary. The room is completely revamped from last season’s below average group, and while there are plenty of new faces and guys to plug into the system, uncertainty is prevalent.

One returner, Andre Turrentine, made a comment Monday that should slightly ease the concerns of Vols fans worried about the cornerbacks specifically. Jermod McCoy, a sophomore who transferred from Oregon State, has apparently been impressing the junior from Nashville.

McCoy is probably the most talented name in the ranks of defensive back for Tennessee. As a freshman he recorded 16 tackles, 7 pass deflections and a pair of interceptions for Oregon State, facing some serious talent at the QB positions such as Michael Penix, Bo Nix, Cam Ward and Noah Fifita.

Tennessee opens its 2024 season on Saturday against in-state FCS Chattanooga. The game is slated to kick off at 12:45 from Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
