Texas is preparing to take on Clemson in the first round of the 2024 College Football Playoff. The Longhorns are the No. 5 seed while the Tigers are the No. 12 seed after winning the ACC Championship Game.
Ahead of the start of the Playoff, almost every team is dealing with players entering the transfer portal. The Longhorns are no exception as defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell will reportedly enter the portal.
Mitchell saw action in 3 games in 2024. The lineman played against Kentucky, Florida, and UTSA, and ended with 4 total tackles. In 2023, Mitchell played in 3 games and collected 3 tackles.
In high school, Mitchell was rated as a 4-star prospect. The 247Sports Composite ranking had Mitchell as the No. 25 defensive lineman and the No. 3 prospect out of New Jersey in the 2023 class. Mitchell was heavily pursued by Georgia, Texas A&M, and Miami among others before deciding on Texas.
The incredibly deep defensive line at Texas has multiple players exploring their options elsewhere. In addition to Mitchell, Tiaoalii Savea, Aaron Bryant, and Jaray Bledsoe are other defensive linemen who have entered the portal. In total, the Longhorns have seen 9 players enter the portal so far.
While several players are leaving Austin, the team has already brought in a few as well. Punter Jack Bouwmeester, linebacker Brad Spence, and DL Cole Brevard have all committed to the Longhorns for 2025.
On the field, the Longhorns will kick off against the Tigers on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
