Although it’s been over 30 years since Paul “Bear” Bryant roamed the sidelines at Alabama, the sea of houndstooth in Tuscaloosa on Saturdays is a testament to the coaching legend’s enduring popularity.

Now, a member of Bryant’s family tree is making waves of his own. Paul Tyson, the great grandson of Bryant and a 6-foot-4 quarterback prospect, has a few developments on the recruiting trail that may make Tide fans’ skin crawl.

According to a well-reported story by Joseph Goodman of al.com, Tyson isn’t exactly guaranteed to follow in his great grandfather’s footsteps and play at Alabama. The Class of 2019 quarterback’s high school coach is a former protege of Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, and Tyson appears interested in both Clemson and Notre Dame.

“Growing up I was an Alabama fan, but now as I’m growing up and becoming more of an athlete and prospect I’d say I’m open to anybody,” Paul Tyson told al.com. “Whoever has an interest in me.”

Although the Tide have shown interest in Tyson, Goodman reports that the quarterback is visiting Notre Dame over spring break and has an affinity for the program that just upended Alabama in the national championship game.

Tyson is the first in Bryant’s lineage to have the potential to play college football. His father, Marc Tyson, attended Alabama while Bryant was still the head coach, but he did not pursue a spot on the football team.

Tyson will be a junior for Hewitt-Trussville in the fall, and there is plenty of time left in his recruitment. Regardless, this could get crazy, even by Alabama’s standards.
