Pinkel was actually hired at Missouri a month before Richt was hired at UGA (Yes I know you mention that they have been at the schools the same number of seasons and that Mizzou wasn't in the SEC at the time).

The game they lost as the number 1 team was in the Big 12 Championship game. They "could never reclaim the spot" largely because they never had a chance to reclaim the spot. Also, the game was in December of 2007, not 2008.
