One very important point to add about the Missouri Tigers. The filthy guerrillas threatening Columbia were jayhawkers from Kansas. When Mizzou and Kansas met in the first college football game West of the Mississippi River, the University of Kansas had adopted the accursed Jayhawk as a mascot. It was only natural for Missouri to name themselves after the Columbia Tigers... a group so fearsome that the Jayhawkers slunk away without giving a fight. Kind of reminds me of the current negotiations between the schools to renew the Border Rivalry.
