New Orleans Saints assistant joins Auburn staff as co-defensive coordinator
An NFL assistant has joined head coach Gus Malzahn’s staff at Auburn.
According to FootballScoop.com, Auburn has announced New Orleans Saints defensive backs coach Wes McGriff as its new co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach.
McGriff just completed his third season coaching the Saints’ secondary, but he has plenty of experience coaching in the SEC.
Before joining the Saints, McGriff held the same title he’ll be holding at Auburn with Ole Miss back in 2012. He played a role in the Rebels’ incredible 2013 recruiting class, and he was the lead recruiter for Robert Nkemdiche.
Prior to that, he served as the defensive backs coach/recruiting coordinator at Vanderbilt. In fact, FootballScoop.com reported that McGriff was set to become Vanderbilt’s defensive coordinator before the 2015 season, but he pulled out due to contract language.
His first major college coaching gig was at Kentucky, where he coached the running backs in 2001 and the cornerbacks in 2002.
In his playing career, McGriff was an outside linebacker for Savannah State from 1986 to 1989.
