Tennessee lost another heartbreaker in the Swamp last weekend by a score of 26-20. By now, especially if you are a Vol fan, it’s been impossible to miss the “highlight” that was the final play against Florida. However, had the Vols not missed three field goals in the game, that play likely never happens.

The team’s decision to rotate dualing kickers didn’t appear to pay off against the Gators and coach Butch Jones was asked about that Wednesday.

During his appearance on the weekly SEC Coaches Teleconference, Jones talked about the matchup. Here’s a summary of what was said during the call:

  • Obviously last weekend was very disappointing but it’s all about how you respond. We need to impact the QB much more. We have to improve tackling. I like the mindset of the football team.
  • How do you manage players that want to play and may not think they are playing enough? You have an opportunity every day to put your resume on video. The players that stay and have resolve usually end up doing very well. How do you respond to not playing? The ones that work hard to get on the field are the ones we want here.
  • How about the play of your OL? I think they are still progressing. They are getting better and better but the competition continues to get better so they must as well. I’ve liked their consistency.
  • Regarding the field goals and switching out the kickers. Is there a method there? There are many variables that go into that. It’s a body of work. It’s the yard line, the wind, the field conditions. We chart everything. The hash marks, etc. We have two good kickers and they have to perform.
  • Do they both warm up before kicks? They do, I want them both having the mentality that they will be kicking at any time.
  • With so many defensive injuries, who is stepping up most? I think for the most part, it starts up front. They’ve been doing a good job of setting things up. Daniel Bituli is a name that sticks out, he’s been doing very well this week in practice.
