A Sweetwater, Tenn. woman thought that the handle Camsutton2323 on the messaging app Snapchat belonged to Volunteers CB Cameron Sutton. It did not – and now the man posing as Sutton is facing two years in prison.

According to multiple media reports, Brandon Douglas Shanahan, 22, also of Sweetwater, was arrested Tuesday for an extortion scheme that involved communications between the Camsutton2323 account and the woman believing him to be Sutton. The woman told law enforcement that she thought the account was authentic because of the name and reference to Sutton’s No. 23 jersey number, which he wore prior to the 2015 season. Sutton wore No. 7 last season.

Investigators concluded that Sutton had not conversed with the woman before on via Snapchat, or any other means of communication, and had no knowledge or involvement in Shanahan’s impersonation.

The cyber crimes task force investigators Shanahan believes he contacted other women from the fake Sutton Snapchat account. Other victims are encouraged to contact the FBI office at 865-744-0751.
