On Monday afternoon, South Alabama coach Joey Jones announced he’d be resigning his position at the end of the season.

Now, the search is on to replace Jones, who has been the only head coach in South Alabama history after the school started its football program in 2009.

Already, a few names with connections to the SEC, including former Tennessee coach Butch Jones, ex-Tennessee QB Tee Martin and Ole Miss interim coach Matt Luke, have been linked to the opening:

The only one of the three potential SEC candidates currently unemployed is Jones, who was fired by Tennessee last weekend. It’ll be interesting to see what Ole Miss does with Luke, but for now he’s the interim coach.

Meanwhile, Martin is the offensive coordinator at USC at the moment, so he too is not available to discuss the position just yet.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see which direction South Alabama wants to go, but it could be a great spot for a former head coach to rehab his image and build on what Jones has done.
