Heading into the 2018 NFL Draft, as many as five former Alabama stars could be selected in the first round — Calvin Ridley, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Ronnie Harrison, Rashaan Evans and Da’Ron Payne.

There are several other former Crimson Tide players who should hear their names called later in the draft, but NFL.com analysts Chad Reuter and Lance Zierlein think a pair of ex-Alabama defenders are overrated.

In an article written this week, they explain why Tony Brown is the most-overrated defensive back this year:

From an athletic perspective, Brown looks as good as any cornerback in this draft with a tremendous combination of size, speed, and explosiveness. However, the tape shows a player who has some issues transitioning in space to stick with his coverage responsibilities. I love his physical traits, but I don’t feel like they always translate to the field when I watch his tape.

Then, moving to interior defensive linemen, they don’t think Da’Shawn Hand made enough big plays to justify his current draft projections:

Hand was a second-team All-SEC pick as a senior, but he didn’t make as many plays as scouts would like to see from a top-tier talent. If he wants to become a difference maker in the NFL, he’ll need to explode off the snap and break down more quickly to make tackles. If he’s picked in the mid-third or fourth round, Hand could be a solid rotational contributor as an end on a three-man line. Hand would need to pick up his playmaking skills to justify an earlier selection.

Both could still be great picks for a team that gets them in the right spot, but Zierlein and Reuter are simply cautioning teams not to pick them too early this week in Dallas.
