The Tennessee Volunteers weren’t sure if top OT Trey Smith was going to be able to play this fall after he missed all spring with blood clots in his lungs.

However, the Vols got some very good news on Tuesday, and now it appears Smith is set to return to the field this fall.

As you can see in the tweet below from ESPN’s Chris Low, Smith has been cleared to play following his treatment:

In the article, Smith said he’s just thankful to be able to get back on the field after missing the spring practice session:

“I’ve never been in this situation before, so I’m just ready to get back out there and really play football again, to hit somebody again,” said Smith, who missed spring practice for what Tennessee officials said was an undisclosed medical condition. “When I first got the verdict back in February, I understood the severity of what was going on. But it was comforting that everybody at UT just kept telling me that it wasn’t about football, but about my well-being and my life, and not when I was going to get back. They were concerned about me as a person.

“I just had to take my time with it and let God do his work.”

How quickly Smith returns to full speed remains to be seen, but this is definitely news to be celebrated in Knoxville.
