Mississippi State may have lost running backs coach Charles Huff to Alabama over the weekend but Joe Moorhead is keeping his most important assistant on staff for at least another season.

Defensive coordinator Bob Shoop, a 2018 finalist for the Frank Broyles Award — given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach — has agreed to sign a new two-year deal to stay in Starkville according to Steve Robertson of Gene’s Page/247Sports. Robertson is also reporting a new deal for MSU defensive line coach Brian Baker.

Shoop’s first defense at Mississippi State was arguably the best unit in the program’s 119-year history last season. MSU held seven opponents to their lowest point total of the regular season, led the SEC in scoring defense, did not allow a single rushing touchdown at home, did not allow 30 points to be scored this season (the only SEC defense that can say that) and finished No. 1 in the SEC in nearly every statistical metric.

Prior to joining Moorhead’s staff, Shoop served as defensive coordinator at Tennessee, Penn State and Vanderbilt.

Baker was a holdover from Dan Mullen’s staff and helped to build arguably the best defensive line in MSU history this season. Baker has 19 years experience coaching in the NFL.
