Carnell “Cadillac” Williams is coming home.

With a current opening on his coaching staff, Gus Malzahn is turning to one of the most talented running backs in Auburn history to fill the void. That’s right, Cadillac Williams is expected to be Auburn’s new running backs coach.

This news was first reported by Jason Caldwell of Inside the Auburn Tigers. The spot on Malzahn’s staff became open after Tim Horton stepped down from the role. Horton is expected to stay on at Auburn but serve in an off-the-field role with the Tigers moving forward.

During his four-year playing career on The Plains, Williams rushed for 3,831 yards and 45 touchdowns. He teamed with Ronnie Brown to form one of the best one-two SEC backfields ever during their time at Auburn. The duo helped lead Auburn to the 2004 SEC Championship and a final ranking of No. 2 by the end of the season.

Williams went on to be the fifth overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers, three spots after Brown was drafted by the Dolphins.

Since the end of his playing career, Williams has served as a coach at IMG Academy and was expected to be an assistant coach during the debut season of the Alliance of American spring football league. His hire by the Birmingham franchise was announced back in October.
