Most mock drafts leading up to the NBA Draft pegged former Kentucky star Tyrese Maxey in the mid-teens of the first round. But Maxey wasn’t taken until No. 21 by the Philadelphia 76ers, a move that coach John Calipari said will be one of regret for other franchises.

Calipari was a guest on College Sports on SiriusXM and predicted that his comments will be played back in the future once Maxey establishes his career in the NBA.

“He is somebody that can score so many different ways,” Calipari said. “That’s what makes it, it’s Jamal Murray. He can score on runners, on lefties, on righties, on 3s, get fouled, make free throws, so that’s what he can do.”

Maxey was the first draft choice of new 76ers president Daryl Morey and coach Doc Rivers.

Maxey burst into tears when he was selected after he averaged 19 points for Kentucky last season and shot 43 percent from the field. He extended Kentucky’s streak of 11 straight drafts with a first-round pick. Maxey was the 30th first-round pick under Calipari. Maxey shot 29 percent from 3-point range.

LeBron James was among the people congratulating Maxey for being drafted.

Staying in the SEC, the 76ers also took Arkansas guard Isaiah Joe.
