National Signing Day is in the books and spring practices for the 2022 college football season are just around the corner. It’s extremely early to be looking at 2022 Heisman Trophy candidates, but FOX Sports college football analyst RJ Young named 5 sleeper candidates, including 2 quarterbacks from the SEC.

Young ranks Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker and Arkansas’ KJ Jefferson Nos. 1 and 3 on his list of sleepers. They are joined by Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim (No. 2), Kansas State’s Deuce Vaughn (No. 4) and Texas’ Quinn Ewers (No. 5).

In 2021, Hooker was 206-of-303 passing for 2,945 yards, 31 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions. He also ran the ball 166 times for 616 yards and 5 touchdowns. Hooker was considered a redshirt senior in 2021, but gets a 6th year of college football with the NCAA’s blanket waiver that did not count 2020 against players’ eligibility.

Jefferson, in his first season as a starter, was 198-of-294 passing for 2,676 yards, 21 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions. Additionally, Jefferson logged 146 carries for 664 yards and 6 TDs.

The 2022 season is a few months away, but we’ll see if either SEC QB plays their way into the Heisman mix. Impressive spring showings could certainly help generate some offseason buzz.
