SEC CHAMPIONSHIP MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES

10. LSU John Corbello’s three field goals vs. Tennessee (2001): In one of the biggest upsets in SEC Championship Game history, No. 21 LSU kept second-ranked Tennessee out of the BCS Championship Game with a 31-20 victory highlighted by Corbello’s kicks of 45, 47 and 45 yards. Quarterback Matt Mauck’s 13-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter gave the Tigers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

9. Tim Tebow leads comeback over Alabama (2008): In search of his second Heisman, Florida’s national star accounted for 273 yards of offense and three touchdowns, two scores coming in the fourth quarter to upend the top-ranked and previously unbeaten Crimson Tide. Tebow was previously 0-5 in his career when faced with a fourth-quarter deficit.

8. Jonathan Zenon’s game-winning interception return for LSU vs. Tennessee (2007): The fifth-ranked Tigers picked off Eric Ainge twice in the fourth quarter, the first coming on Zenon’s 18-yard score that gave LSU a 21-14 advantage. The Vols haven’t been the same since with 2007 marking the last time Tennessee won the Eastern Division.

7. Mark Ingram finishes off Tebow, Florida (2009): Alabama got its revenge against defending national champion Florida in an epic No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown highlighted by Heisman winner Ingram’s 113 yards rushing during a 32-13 win. Tim Tebow crying in the fourth quarter was a memorable shot for the previously unbeaten Gators.

6. Antonio Langham’s pick-six at Legion Field (1992): Arguably the most memorable defensive play in SEC Championship Game history came in the inaugural title between the Crimson Tide and Gators at historic Legion Field in Birmingham. With the game knotted at 21 with three minutes remaining, Langham stepped in front of a Shane Matthews pass and returned it for a touchdown, providing unbeaten and top-ranked Alabama with the victory.

5. Peyton Manning’s brilliance vs. Auburn (1997): The future NFL star turned in a virtuoso performance inside the Georgia Dome with 373 yards passing and four touchdowns during Tennessee’s 30-29 victory over the Tigers.

4. Six touchdowns from Auburn’s Cam Newton vs. South Carolina (2010): Newton was too much for the Gamecocks for the second time during his Heisman campaign, throwing for 335 yards and running for 73 more during a 56-17 blowout. He finished with a title-game best six total touchdowns. Wideout Darvin Adams set the receiving yardage record in the game with 217 including a 51-yard Hail Mary touchdown on the final play of the first half.

3. The Honey Badger’s incredible outing vs. Georgia (2011): With the LSU offense struggling against Georgia, the top-ranked and unbeaten Tigers called on Tyrann Mathieu, its playmaking defensive back with a flair for appearing on SportsCenter, to lead a 42-point charge over the game’s final three quarters. Mathieu’s MVP performance included a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown, a tackle-breaking interception return that set up another score and a fumble recovery.

2. Danny Wuerrfel’s Heisman outing vs. Alabama (1996): Steve Spurrier’s favorite quarterback threw a title game-record six touchdown passes during the Gators’ 45-30 win over the Crimson Tide, finishing with 401 yards through the air. Three quarterbacks have thrown four touchdown passes since (Manning, Grossman, Newton), but no player’s came close to matching Wuerrfel’s six. Reidel Anthony caught a record 11 passes in the contest for 171 yards and three scores.

1. Tre Mason’s rushing explosion vs. Mizzou (2013): As a 2.5-point underdog, Auburn eclipsed the previous SEC title game record for rushing by an incredible 195 yards in last year’s win over Mizzou, a victory that catapulted the Tigers into the BCS Championship Game. Junior tailback Tre Mason scored four touchdowns and set several records including total rushing yards (304) and attempts (46).
