John Chavis’ run as LSU’s defensive coordinator could be set to continue, as he reportedly has an extension offer from LSU awaiting his signature.

The defensive coordinator’s current contract runs through next December, paying him $1.3 million for next season.

Chavis would remain one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in the country with the reported extension offer, with an average annual salary around $1.3 million over the course of the deal. In 2014, Chavis was the third-highest paid assistant coach in the country in 2014 at $1.3 million, behind only Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.

The extension would end any idea of Chavis skipping town. Over the weekend, reports bubbled up that Chavis could be a candidate to take over the defense at Texas A&M, as the Aggies are in the midst of a job search after firing former defensive coordinator Mark Snyder in November, following A&M’s regular season finale against LSU, a 23-17 Tigers win.

According to the Advocate (Baton Rouge) reporter Ross Dellenger, the three-year deal is on the table for Chavis, but has not been signed yet after the Aggies reached out to Chavis.

In six years under Chavis, LSU’s defense has consistently been one of the best in the country. After finishing 26th in total defense in Chavis’ first year in 2009, LSU has ranked no lower than No. 15 in the nation in total defense. The Tigers finished the regular season ranked No. 8 this year.
