Missouri is more than halfway through its August camp, which means Tigers fans are that much closer to football at Faurot Field.

Coaches, though, still have adjustments to make as the Tigers head into the season. Position groups like receiver and defensive line are still in flux, while more established groups are seeing changes for both the present and future.

While the coaches continue to make adjustments, read up on five things we’ve learned so far from Missouri’s preseason camp:

1. Marcell Frazier can contribute immediately

The JUCO transfer posed a lot of questions for Missouri’s defensive line. Would he have a role for this season, or have to wait? How does his skill set fit in with other Missouri pass rushers? Would he take quickly to the speed of the SEC?

Well, Frazier has answered those questions, and then some. Missouri defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski said Monday that Frazier is in the running for a starting end spot.

Just a year removed from playing at the College of the Siskiyous, Frazier seems poised to become an important name within Missouri’s defensive line.

2. Drew Lock is the real deal

It was only a scrimmage, and he mostly saw action against non-starting defenders, but freshman QB Drew Lock lived up to the hype during live action. Lock completed 14 of 19 passes for 139 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Lock was by far the most efficient quarterback of Missouri’s first scrimmage. Quarterbacks coach Andy Hill told the Kansas City Star that Lock’s immediate presence reminds him of Missouri legend Chase Daniel. That’s some high praise.

3. Receivers are still shuffling

We knew Missouri’s receiving corps would be a work in progress heading into camp. That remains to be the case due to some injuries that have hit Tigers receivers.

Freshman receiver Johnathon Johnson is out indefinitely with a right ankle sprain, as is junior Eric Laurent with a viral illness. Redshirt sophomore J’Mon Moore hurt his shoulder during Monday’s practice, so it looks like at least three receivers will be getting increased reps this week.

Finally, Missouri coaches aren’t afraid to move other players to receiver to increase depth at the position.

4. Morgan Steward is ready to play, but coaches keeping a close eye

Steward, a junior running back who missed all of last season due to a hip injury, has slowly worked himself into reps during fall camp. Missouri coaches let Steward rush nine times during the team’s first scrimmage, but then held him out of the following practice for a planned day off.

Steward wants to contribute immediately, though, telling the Columbia Daily Tribune that he could’ve kept going during Saturday’s scrimmage.

5. Barry Odom likes the blitz

Missouri’s new defensive coordinator isn’t afraid to use the blitz. The Mizzou defense recorded six (non-contact) “sacks” during Saturday’s scrimmage, with Odom sending linebackers Kentrell Brothers, Donavin Newsom and Clarence Green from the edges.

Reports indicate that, during the scrimmage, Odom didn’t use the 3-4 that served as his base defense at Memphis, but it appears that formations won’t prevent the Tigers from being creative on defense.
