John Parker Wilson believes there’s not a lot of love lost between Alabama and Tennessee. The former Alabama quarterback sees it as a different rivalry than Auburn, which he described as more brotherly or family oriented.

“You think about how streaky the series is, how lopsided it’s been, ‘This is like a hatred rivalry,” he said on WJOX’s “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning.” “There’s a lot of people that don’t like Tennessee and that’s what makes it fun, because you want to beat Tennessee by 100 points. Auburn we just got to win, you’ve got to beat Tennessee by 100. That’s the standard.”

Wilson recalls hearing “Rocky Top” being played in the weight room, locker room and field.

“I think we’re lucky to play them one time a year, I hope that keeps going because this is a big deal,” he said.

Wilson recalled the 2005 game, his freshman season, when Roman Harper made a forced fumble that rolled to the end zone and Alabama picked it up. Another game that stood out was 2006 at Knoxville, “the loudest game I’ve ever played in” when Tennessee won 16-13. In 2007, Wilson said there were 5 or 6 Alabama players who were suspended just before the game. Alabama won 41-17.

“Welp, they’re not going to be there, and it was just one guy, it was 5. And we go out, and I think it was one of my best days passing my whole career,” Wilson said. “It’s one of those days where you’re in the zone. It doesn’t come along very often, and when it does, you definitely remember it.”

Wilson also recalled that as a kid, he grew up with a pair of neighbors, next door and behind, who were Tennessee fans.

“It’s a decade of these guys rubbing it in our face every week,” Wilson said.
