There is some debate about what Alabama must to on Saturday against Auburn in order to stake its claim in the College Football Playoff. SEC Network host and ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum said it’s simple.
“I just think they have to win the game,” Finebaum said on ESPN’s “Get Up.” “I just think the committee is smart enough, well, I hope they’re smart enough to know that winning at Auburn is a big deal. Alabama didn’t win their two years ago, they didn’t win their in 2013, the famous Kick Six game.”
There is one school of thought that teams must win by wide margins in order to impress poll voters and members of the CFP committee. After all, Clemson fell in the rankings starting with its one-point win at North Carolina. Other teams have tacked on late touchdowns in order to widen their margin of victory.
“I don’t think this is a beauty contest,” Finebaum said. “If they win the game, it shows that Mac Jones is capable. I don’t know if they move up ahead of Georgia. But they’re in position then to get in the Playoff.”
