Alabama went into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday and walked out with a 30-24 win over Ole Miss. It proved to be a hollow win for the Crimson Tide, ranked ninth, after LSU has beaten Arkansas earlier in the afternoon to clinch the SEC West.

The Crimson Tide won’t be in the SEC Championship Game in 20 days and they won’t be in the playoff. The Alabama fan base, used winning a lot of championships, just going 10-2 and finishing around the top five doesn’t have the same feeling for them as it might for other fan bases.

ESPN’s Matt Barrie and Paul Finebaum discussed the plight of Alabama fans during their Sunday webcast.

“They’re really disappointed and distraught and careful not to criticize Saban, especially when it comes to coaching decisions,” Finebaum said. “They would much rather call for the heads of Pete Golding and Bill O’Brien…they’re pretty much demanding it.”

Losing out on winning a championship hurts Alabama fans enough, but watching Georgia presumably take the Crimson Tide’s spot on top of the mantle is an even bigger stomach punch.

“If Kirby Smart wins another national championship they’re going to look at that and go ‘in the era of Nick Saban his protege has now won two national championships’…you can’t ignore that.”
