Paul Finebaum called it shocking that an Alabama quarterback didn’t enter his name in the transfer portal after Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide last week.

During his regular appearance on “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning,” Finebaum noted that there are 5 scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, and wondered how that would work in practice.

“It doesn’t seem like a great situation, and it’s really surprising,” Finebaum said. “I have no Earthly idea why somebody didn’t choose to go, unless it just wasn’t a very good time to go and that very well may be the explanation. There’s not a lot of great opportunities in late April, early May.”

Greg McElroy suggested that players are still in the running, such as Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson, and entering the portal would concede defeat.

The trio then pivoted to the SEC tying the B1G for the most selections in the NFL Draft, a title the league has held or tied for 17 seasons, and how Georgia’s had 19 defensive players drafted the last 3 drafts, and 25 players overall in the last 2 drafts, the most ever in a 2-draft span.

Finebaum took Cole Cubelic’s point there one step further and said of the first 7 seasons for Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney and Kirby Smart, that the Georgia coach is dramatically ahead in talent acquisition and producing NFL talent.

“As good as Alabama’s roster is, it may very well be the second-best roster in college football,” Finebaum said. “It’s all about keeping up with Georgia now, versus the other way around. He’s not only recruiting talent, he’s developing and keeping talent. … These are staggering numbers.”
