Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa won two “player of the year” awards at the College Football Awards Show in Atlanta Thursday (Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award), but the media still wanted to talk about his backup, Jalen Hurts.

Tagovailoa offered high praise for Hurts opting to stay at Alabama after losing the starting job.

“(It’s a) testament to Jalen’s hard work he’s put in the offseason,” Tagovailoa told reporters. “To character — it shows the kind of character he has, with his faith as well. The kind of background he comes from with his family support. I think it’s something very special for him to have stayed, and I definitely think he deserves everything that’s coming his way right now.”

Tagovailoa elaborated on that to say Hurts is simply an all-around high-character person.

“I think it’s a bigger testament to how he was raised, with his family, how they raised him,” Tagovailoa said. “I think they’ve done a tremendous job with that. Jalen’s an all-around great person. He’s a great student, and on the field, he’s just a very good supporter to me and Mac Jones as well. Mac Jones is a great supporter of us. But you know, just an all-around great person.”

Many would understand if Tagovailoa was tired of talking about Hurts, but as those answers indicate, he’s handled it incredibly well and seems genuinely happy to see his teammate getting extra media attention.
