Tua Tagovailoa wasn’t having his best showing on Sunday. And by the fourth quarter, he was on the bench, as the Miami Dolphins brought in veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to close out their road game against the Denver Broncos.

Miami replaced Tagovailoa with Fitzpatrick at the start of a drive that began with 10 minutes and 44 seconds to go in the fourth quarter with the Dolphins trailing, 20-10. There was no reason given for the quarterback switch, although it’s possible that Tagovailoa may have been injured on an earlier play.

Tagovailoa had been sacked six times, and on one of them, he took an ugly hit to his left leg:

Prior to his exit, Tagovailoa was 11-for-20 for 83 yards and a touchdown. The former Alabama quarterback was making his fourth start of his rookie NFL season. He had been playing well in recent weeks, leading the Dolphins to victory in each of their previous three games.

Tagovailoa wasn’t playing bad on Sunday, but Miami was also having trouble getting its offense going.

Tagovailoa’s career at Alabama closed with a hip injury that cut his 2019 season short. That didn’t stop the Dolphins from selecting him with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, though, and they had no trouble benching Fitzpatrick and insterting Tagovailoa midseason.

There should be more updates regarding Tagovailoa’s status after the game.
