Big 12 program fires head coach after 6-6 campaign in 2024

West Virginia has fired head coach Neal Brown, according to a report.

That news was first shared by Mike Casazza of 247Sports on Sunday afternoon and has since been confirmed by multiple other outlets.

Brown spent 6 seasons as West Virginia’s head coach. He reached bowl eligibility in 4 of those campaigns, but won more than 6 games just once. His best season in Morgantown came last season when the Mountaineers went 8-4 in the regular season before winning the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Prior to joining West Virginia, Brown was the head coach at Troy and produced 3 consecutive double-digit win seasons while leading the Trojans. It’s possible he will be a candidate for another head coaching job this cycle.

It’s been an uncharacteristically-quiet coaching carousel so far for college football head coaches. West Virginia is just the third power-conference program to have a head coaching vacancy so far this offseason, joining North Carolina and Purdue.

With only 3 power-conference jobs currently expected to open, there may not be much movement in the coaching ranks this offseason. However, SEC assistant coaches such as Georgia’s Glenn Schumann and others could be linked to this vacancy in the coming days.
