Joel Klatt took time on his show “Breaking the Huddle” on FOX Sports’ social media channels to discuss his desire to revamp the current College Football Playoff system, in hopes of erasing much of the controversy that seems to surround it each year when the top 4 teams are selected.

First, the FOX Sports college football analyst said that he would remove the divisional system from each of the nation’s FBS conferences.

“Pit the top 2 teams from each conference in their conference championship game,” he said. “We’d have better matchups in those games, we’d have better data points in those games, and you would get over the schedule imbalance that I think nags some of these conferences. I think the Big Ten this year is a great example of that.”

Then, Klatt proposed possibly creating multiple committees or implementing either a computer poll or human poll into the rankings system. “Any number of those things would dilute the committee’s rankings and give us a system with less bias,” he explained.

As far as the current television contract, Klatt calls for the CFP contract to be spread through multiple networks, not just solely residing on ESPN. “You’ve got different voices talking about the sport. You could also drive more revenue with more networks paying premium dollars for the premium portion of the season,” he said. “You powers that be, you know that I’m right.”

Finally, Klatt spoke on the need for “more objective criteria” in the selection process, which he called a “no-brainer”. He proposed either a 12-team or 14-team playoff, with the 12-team playoff having the 6 top conference champions automatically qualifying, with the top 4 receiving byes. Then, the other 8 would be at-large selections. For a 14-team playoff, he would have 2 byes, with the same type of model as the 12-team playoff.

“We can’t keep going on with this absolutely ridiculous notion that we’re just going to select the 4 best teams in college football and play them off,” he said. “Objective criteria would allow for more concrete ways for teams to earn their way into the playoff.”
