UAB is expected to hire a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback as its new coach.

The Blazers, who were led by interim coach Bryant Vincent and finished 6-6 this season, will turn to Trent Dilfer, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. Vincent was elevated after Bill Clark resigned for health reasons in June.

Dilfer, a former ESPN analyst, was the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft by Tampa Bay in 1994. A 1997 Pro Bowler, Dilfer appeared in 130 games, throwing for 20,518 yards, 113 touchdowns and 129 interceptions.

Dilfer, 50, was most recently the head coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. He played at Fresno State, and later in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. He won the Super Bowl with the Ravens in the 2000 season.

He joined ESPN in 2008.

In 6 seasons at UAB, Clark is most remembered for engineering the rebirth of a program that temporarily disbanded and led it to a 49-26 record in 6 seasons which included 5 bowl game appearances.
