Weird situation. Smart says he can't play him, even though he says he is healthy, because he has not gotten enough reps with the ones. However Kirby, at least until today, has refused to give him these reps, while giving them to two players who everyone who has followed Georgia knows have no chance in the world of beating elite competition. To not have given Daniels a chance to play last Saturday...in a game they absolutely had to win, makes zero sense to anyone. Now, it's been said that Kirby might not play JT the rest of the year out of fear that he will play well and make him look like a complete fool for not playing him sooner.
Anyone who seriously thinks Mathis is the answer is deluding themselves. I've never seen a more timid QB in my life. If you look in the dictionary under the term "deer-in-headlights", there is a picture of D'wan. Meanwhile Kirby's reason for JT not playing is that he is not getting the reps in practice to allow that. Of course that is 100% on Kirby who refuses to give him time with the 1's. As the article states about Smart, "he’s either being willfully ignorant, lying to himself, or has no idea how to evaluate quarterback talent. JT has a great arm and is a smart guy. Playing behind Georgia's very good offensive line, the only way he won't pick apart defenses is if Kirby doesn't allow him to see the field...which seems to be his plan.
I really think Kirby is at a point now where he can't won't/can't play Daniels. If he does and he performs well, the fan base will crucify him for not playing him sooner...and let's face it JT can't play worse than the two QBs playing in front of him. His excuse for playing him right now is that he is not getting the reps in practice to allow him to play on Saturdays. Of course he is not getting them solely due to fact Kirby is not giving them to him. Common sense says that when your current QB's basically give you a 0% chance of winning a must win game to have any hope of making the playoffs, you at least give another QB a shot. The fact that Smart is not doing so is completely absurd. In my opinion it is primarily due to pig-headed stubbornness on his part.
JT Daniels freshman season almost has to be dismissed as a criteria for evaluating him. In his junior season in high school, he had as good a season as any QB ever had. He was almost flawless passing and managed to run for 8.8ypc as well. Mater Dei played a national schedule (inluding IMG and Gorman), as well as playing in arguably the top HS league in the country. He cruised through it going 15-0. His team won the mythical HS national championship. Based on that, he took a double load of classes at his academically demanding high school, studied literally around the clock, and graduated a year early. He arrived on campus noticeably out of shape since he had no time to work out. He then had a competition with 3 other QB's all sharing equal reps, winning the job the last week, but never had the time to become familiar with his receivers. Helton who is totally clueless, promoted a 29 year old quality analyst who had never coached before to be his QB coach. Both Helton and Tee Martin alternating calling his plays, which was a disaster for everyone. JT played behind an absolutely horrible offensive line, with a center who simply could not snap the ball properly and should have been benched. Every play was an adventure. The result was a complete disaster. JT was running for his life on almost every play, even on those few occasions when the center snapped the ball properly. The kid went through hell is freshman year, then suffered his ACL tear in the first half of his first game as a soph. He may not turn out to be a world-beater, but he walked into a horrible situation at USC. He needed a change of scenery. The young man is tremendously bright and has a great deal of arm talent. If Monken gets him properly prepared mentally, and his OL gives him protection, he'll pick opposing defenses apart.
