I am a doubter of Malzahn at the moment myself, but to say that the passing game looked limited against Mercer is a completely untrue statement. Also untrue to say Stidham couldn't showcase his arm against Mercer. He went 32/37 for over 360 passing yards. Were it not for four fumbles and an interception, the post-game talks would have been about Stidham's big passing day instead of a close game with Mercer. Play calling and ball movement looked great against Mercer all day, the only issue was ball security.
