So going to someone’s house and beating them by 10 doesn’t matter if it happens early enough in the season. This would be wildly unfair to Texas fans…
Totally agree. I love me some SEC football but both teams has their chance to get in and lose when it mattered (Georgia to Bama and Bama to Texas).
So Texas goes to Bama’s house and wins by 10 but it’s meaningless because…. “the team was struggling” what???
Can everyone stop acting like the CFP committees only job Jabri pick the 4 best teams? It’s not. That’s why we play the games. If it were really that does anyone really think Washington is better than Georgia? Is Texas better than Georgia? Georgia has their chance to get in and they lost. They’re out. Bama had their chance and they lost. They should be out. Michigan, Washington, and FSU, all went undefeated, beat multiple ranked teams and won their resource P5 conferences. Texas did the same but also beat the SEC champ. For those that want to leave FSU out because they’re “clearly not one of the top 4 teams” — have you forgotten that literally year one of the CFP was won by a 4 seed starting a third string QB who had played two games? Hayes…you cannot in the same article say FSU doesn’t deserve to get in because they’re not good enough without Travis then later say TCU should have gotten in over OSU in ‘14 because of their resume even though OSU proved to be the best of the bunch in the end. Michigan, Washington, FSU, Texas
For all those saying “why fire him now? Why not let him finish the season?” It’s about getting a jump on the coaching market. The “provide a spark” thing is just PR. This is about the fact that the teams who move on sooner have an advantage in the coaching search. This is is a reason Arnett got hired in the first place because the timing of Mike Leach passing away meant we were very late in the coach search window. It’s also worth remembering that this AD did not hire Arnett, so there’s no real sense of “giving him a fair shot” from his POV. He’s focused on doing the best for the program and I think it would be hard to make the case that any reasonable person looked at what Arnett did with a very solid roster and would feel good about letting him have another year. Most of our bosses wouldn’t wait a year if they were paying us millions of dollars to do a far better job.
Super late non-conference matchups will do that… but it does suck.
You guys are looking really strong — great win against SC. A&M could easily start 1-4 if they can’t beat Miami this week.
I’m actually really happy for Pittman, Leach and Kiffin hired with all this fanfare then he goes and beats them both! Keep up the good work. We’ll see you in a few weeks.
I’m so sick of the kind of “fan” you are. So impatient, so arrogant, so ignorant of what it takes to win football games that your first response to a loss is always “fire the coach!!” Why don’t we give the guy a chance to work through the growing pains of rebuilding a program before we kick him to the curb for a 2-point loss to a less-talented opponent. If we’re regularly losing these kinds of games over the next few years then let’s talk… All that to say, you’re an embarrassment.
To all of you in the comments section saying sportswriters should just talk about sports, realize that this very article isn’t “just talking about sports” but offering commentary or politics in the sports world. Those who first say “just talks about sports” then continue with their own opinion in regard to how social issues should be handled in sports...guys that’s just disgustingly hypocritical. The truth is you don’t LIKE what they’re saying about politics - so you’d rather just say “shut up and play sports” because just saying “shut up with your political opinions because I don’t like them and I think you’re wrong” makes you just another person trying to silence opinions you disagree with...and trying to silence someone is about as unamerican as it gets.
