Had Kirby not lost Justin Fields as well, this wouldn't have been our first natty in 41 years.
If he COULD pick up a 5-star QB at this point. What 5-star QB would want to come to UGA after examining Kirby's complete and utter lack of prowess in dealing with QBs? A tough sell, IMHO.
I agree with the ordering from the article, but not for the same reasons. Bama absolutely #1. Michigan absolutely #2. I believe Cincy to be the #3 team. Still undefeated, and lost to UGA in the Peach Bowl last year on a last-second field goal. If UGA makes it to the final group, it can only be as #4 on merit; however, the committee is not going to want to have an immediate Tide-UGA rematch, so having the Tide play Cinci, and Michigan play UGA, makes more sense.
Yep. George Box said "All models are wrong; some are useful." This one failed both criteria.
Maybe Kirby's not stupid, but he is absolutely atrocious when it comes to QBs (and offense in general, even if that does rest on the OC in large part). Daniels will play on Sunday. Bennett will not. Same with Fields (and Eason) vs Fromm. Kirby losing Fields to Ohio State is the single biggest gaffe in the entire history of UGA football. Kirby is also responsible for the second biggest gaffe in the history of UGA football: getting Demetrus Robertson and barely playing him. Who remembers 2017 with Robertson on his very first touch scoring on a 70+ yard jet sweep? And got not too many touches after that, which is why he's gone too. Yes, he removed a boot from his car, which led to some off-field trouble. But for crying out loud, that isn't like Isaiah Crowell being found with a loaded 9mm with a scratched off serial number. Kirby may be a good recruiter, good DC, but he absolutely sucks at QB decisions, as well as having an OC who can call a game. Trying to play old-school, smashmouth football is idiotic in today's game. There should be no "we are a running team" unless you've got a back or two that are getting well over 1,000 rushing yards per season (we actually did have that with Chubb and Michel). Zeus has 718 yards. Cook has 619. McIntosh 317. UGA is not a great running team. (They could be far better with a passing QB like Daniels who would vastly open up the run game) Kirby has inherited and/or been gifted a plethora of talent independent of his coaching ability (or lack thereof). In his first year, Kirby had Michel, Chubb, Eason, Wynn, Blankenship, etc. My Grandma could've won with that team (and all the teams since then). And don't give me this BS that Bennett gives us another option with his scrambling ability. Daniels's far superior passing game would open up our run game considerably. Don't give me this BS about Bennett being a field general or team leader. That is a "you had one job" requirement for ANY quarterback. Bennett is a good athlete. He is a great story. He can run and throw. All of this is irrelevant. He cannot see over his OL. This is not 1980's Doug-Flutie-doesn't-matter-if-you're-short college football. With the talent we've had--had Eason, then Fields, then Daniels been the starting QB--we would have had more than one national championship by this point. Only fools judge Kirby's success by his record of wins and losses. By analogy: a sports agent shouldn't be judged by the size of the contract he gets for his player. What he should be judged on is the incremental delta he can get his player over and above what the player could've gotten on his own. Any great player (or perceivably great) is going to get a good contract. By the same token, any team with loads of talent is going to win games. Kirby (or my aforementioned Grandma) can't help but win a bunch of games with the talent on the field. What Kirby SHOULD be judged on is his ability to get over and above what anyone could have gotten. On that basis, Kirby has failed, incontrovertibly. And this coming from a lifelong UGA fan.
Smart is not good at evaluating QB talent. Fromm was great as a freshman because of all the talent around him. Eason after recovering from injury was a far better option. Letting Justin Fields go was the worst decision in the history of the UGA program. And now Bennett? Nice story but the guy is great JUCO material, not SEC. Daniels needs to be given a shot.
