HC BK will have that turned around in no time. He just needs to treat him like fam-uh-lee-eah. Sorry LSU, was a tough loss. Lots to be frustrated with — also lots to feel good about it (like a 99-yard drive with your back against the wall).
Meh. You’re barking up the wrong tree with me on this one. I worked for room and board in undergrad. I also took out well into 6 figures of debt for business school. All of which has worked out just fine for me, thanks. I understand both the value and cost of a college education. I’m also both a realist and a capitalist. In a free market, the value of services is set by the market value. Alabama has annual football revenue of around $100mm. Are we saying that the labor of all of the athletes on that team is worth $2.7mm? That’s 85 x the in-state “total cost of attendance” at Alabama. In a free market I’d argue that the labor of the athletes playing football is worth a lot more than $32k. In a world where the SEC is distributing $54.6MM to each school in media and licensing revenue (which, let’s be honest, is really football revenue) and you have coaches making $5-10mm per year, it’s really impossible to make a cogent argument that fair-market value for the athletes is 32k.
I’ll also add that if coaching staff want to take a couple of years to develop QBs before they start they need to be able to think about it from the player’s perspective. Develop me to what end? So that I can have a chance to start on this team in 2 years unless the guy you bring in next year develops quicker? Then I’ll be 3 years into my career and riding the bench on a 7-5 team? Or maybe the young man is more of an experiential learner and feels that they’ll learn and develop faster as a starter at Wake Forest and maybe make some NIL money too? If a player gets 2 years of the best development possible but only get a 50/50 chance of seeing a starting job in year 3, why should they value that development more than starting somewhere else?
Imagine this scenario: Bob is a highly talented marketer who is recruited to BigNameCorp to work for ManagerMike. One year into that job, ManagerMike is under pressure to improve sales that year and makes that call that Bob’s colleague Nancy is going to get the high visibility new project. Bob’s ability to progress and advance is limited by this. Mike tells Bob that he’ll get other projects and that Mike will develop him. Bob gets a phone call from recruiters at AnotherBigCorp where ExecutiveElaine wants to bring Bob in to lead a big project. Anyone want to make a viable argument that it’s not the same thing? Except that there are even more restrictions on the athletes? I love college football but I can’t imagine making an argument at this point that these young men shouldn’t be paid and have rights to negotiate their own deals.
A 4-star WR signed yesterday, after this broke. The entire team, staff and head coach standing with the players protesting sends an incredibly strong message. People want to be part of a team family that has their back.
I'm a huge Tiger fan and have been for over two decades. The hit by Shane Ray was text-book targeting. You have to call it. It is a player safety issue. Shane's reaction to his ejection both live and on social media afterwards is off a young man who made an error in the largest game of his life and is emotional about it. I have no issue with either the call, or his emotional reaction to it.
Great comment thread! This has the potential, in my view, to be a classic start to a new rivalry. Both Mizzou and the Hogs are playing their best football in November and there are consequences for both teams. If the Hogs win, they're likely headed to a better bowl game. If my Tigers win, we're headed back to Atlanta. Can't wait for Friday. Should be a great game.
My goodness. The beat-down Mizzou gave FLA was a fluke? Did you watch the game? Be sure to pray your thanks to Teabow tonight that Mizzou has a pedestrian offense...otherwise the beat-down would have been worse. 4 non-offensive TDs. That's not a fluke, son. That's taking you out behind the woodshed.
