If there was only three minutes on clock like you say, then perhaps not. Wasn't there more time left than that?
Let's not forget that before UT's 7 wins in a row winning streak that they are currently on, the fans at UT were wanting their own Head Coach fired at the halftime of last years game before turning their season around in the 2nd half. Several things...factor into a coaches decision...to kick a field goal on 4th and 8 late in the fourth quarter. This is the first game of the season, Coach Muschamp would want to show confidence in his defense to get the ball back and the offense to score again down 4 after the field goal was made. He also wanted to show his kicker that he believed in his ability to make kicks umder pressure, even though it would still require a touchdown to win by cutting the lead to 4. The number 9 player that let the ball hit him on the punt return was at least blocking to hopefully give his return man time to field the punt and make something on the return. It isn't everyday that you face a rugby style kicker like UT had. In light of all that, I give the Gamecocks credit for coming back when down 21-7.
Butch, you at least use facts to back up what you say but one day you will have to eat the tone of your words when the little boys on the block become bigger than the big boys that now like to run their mouths off like bullies on the playground. One thing I learned about bullies is that they don't often back up what they say when those they are bullying finally decide that "enough is enough" and begin standing up to them. The Gamecocks will rise to the occasion and will earn the respect of those they battle against on the field, and those commenting like us, off the field of play, ought to be grown-up and mature enough to admit it when they see a team like the Gamecocks working their tails off and playing their hearts out. That is what college football should be about. Eapecially in the SEC if it is indeed the best conference in the nation.
That would be all I could ever hope for on the QB side of things. It will be a plus to build offensively and have a defense that gets them the ball in great field position a lot.
I'm sure former Georgia Offensive Coordinator and QB, Bobo, and former Gamecock QB, Connor Shaw, will have his hotdogging, showboating and being arrogant stopped by the time he suits up for the Gamecocks, unless of course, he choses by then to switch his commitment to your Georgia Bulldogs who have consistently offered him a scholarship to play there instead.
Double Teams will bring down stats on paper but Alabama All-Americans know what that is like. So many of their first round drafted players were double teamed and others may have looked better on paper but the NFL scouts still took those Alabama stars over those others because they knew that they were double teamed all the time. I blocked two punts that led to two touchdowns that won two games in consecutive weeks for us early in the season during my senior year in high school. I was double teamed the rest of the season when opposing teams punted. It kept me from blocking any more punts but it also kept more players on the opposing teams from getting down the field to cover our returner. I was third in tackles that season but the defensive end opposite me was named All State. Why? Because I was weak side at DE, and the opposing team ran it my way all night long to stay away from my teammate that was so good.
